Job Summary

Our client, a growing non-profit organization, is seeking a Editorial Director to join its team.  The Editorial Director is responsible for the oversight, editorial quality and content strategy of the organization’s non-scholarly periodicals and editorial content, ensuring the organization effectively disseminates content furthering the organization’s strategic priorities. The Editorial Director collaborates with staff at all levels and members across the organization to develop content aligned with the organization’s mission and is responsible for ensuring all content adheres to the organization’s brand and style guidelines.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following areas:

  • Develop and oversee execution of content strategy for the organization’s internal vehicles, including newsletters, blogs and web content, in support of the organization’s strategic plan and other member communications initiatives and needs.
  • Direct efforts to ensure that organization’s content, accuracy and tone remain consistent with the organization’s standing as a preeminent source of expertise.
  • Ensure editorial consistency across all channels — web, digital, social, print — and adherence to core messaging, brand voice, style and tone guidelines.
  • Maintain editorial standards and procedures for editing, and lead the organization’s content review process, assigning content for review among a designated team of communications staff and ensuring that the organization’s departments are aware of and participate in the content review process.
  • Coordinate requests and review work for external designers, ensuring consistent branding across the organization’s published content.
  • Oversee and edit the organization’s blog, weekly member emails, action alerts and other communications.
  • Work with key staff across departments to develop an organization-wide editorial calendar and recruit organization members to contribute to the organization’s blog and other communications vehicles.
  • Work with key staff to develop editorial calendar and recruit content for the daily newspaper for the organization’s annual conference.
  • Evaluate success of the organization’s member publications, reviewing analytics and other available data with an eye toward continuous improvement.
  • Manage requests for use of the organization’s copyrighted material, based on existing organization policies for reuse of copyrighted material.
  • Develop, write, edit and/or review a wide variety of content types from across the organization.
  • Develop, write, edit and/or review a wide variety of content types from across the organization.
  • Drive and participate in effective processes to foster internal collaboration and enhance efficiency.
  • Use data to create metrics that drive improvement.
  • Manage budget for the organization’s non-scholarly publications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel to the organization’s annual conference, when applicable, and other occasional travel required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or related field, and at least 7 years of progressively responsible communications and/or editorial experience.
  • A consistent increase in responsibility, including leadership and management, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience.
  • Ability to design and develop strategic content in all forms, including blog articles, emails, web content, etc.
  • Experience with content management and delivery while adhering to brand and style guides.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively leading creative and/or editorial staff, freelancers and teams.
  • Experience managing a large and consistently shifting editorial workload.

The organization has a highly competitive total compensation package, offers flexible work arrangements and our organizational culture is highly rated by staff.  This is currently a remote role and will have telework options when the office re-opens.  Our new office is located two blocks from the metro and has a free gym onsite for all employees.
