Job Summary

The Controller provides leadership of the organization’s accounting functions and actively encourages and supports staff development, and team performance. The Controller is responsible for leading all day-to-day finance operations with functional responsibility over accounts payable, bank reconciliations, payroll, and grants administration while ensuring compliance with GAAP standards, regulatory requirements and non-profit business practices consistent with our 501(c)(3) status.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following areas:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of accounting department, including compliance with GAAP, FASB, and regulatory requirements
  • Issue timely and complete financial statements and ensure appropriate supporting documentation is available for review
  • Manage the annual audit and associated tax filings, 990 and UBI
  • Safeguard assets and assure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing internal controls and good governance across all departments
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Oversee the processing of biweekly payroll
  • Provide financial analysis as needed, in particular for cash flow forecast, invested assets, and contract negotiations
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting in accordance with the applicable policies and regulations
  • Develop a competent, properly structured, and highly motivated staff capable of achieving departmental and organizational goals
  • Perform other duties as requested by the CFO
  • Exercise significant leadership in organization’s mission to reduce poverty in America

Management Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and review work prepared by staff and provides verbal and written performance feedback as needed
  • Supervise staff on best practices, policy and procedures, program trends and successful partnership with customer/member groups
  • Consult, coach and mentor staff
  • Motivate and communicate effectively with staff

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Embrace organization’s values and the behaviors that support the values
  • Experience with billing, collections and accounts receivables operation
  • Experience with the preparation of journal entries and balance reconciliations
  • Experience with accounts payable processing and preparing vouchers
  • General ledger management and the ability to prepare, process general journal adjusting entries and closing entries
  • Documented experience in closing monthly income statements and preparation of the trial balance
  • Broad knowledge in using major accounting systems, Microsoft Dynamics experience is a plus.
  • Strong skills in the use of modern report writers, JET Reporting experience is a plus.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with CPA license required
  • Five to ten years of accounting or related experience in a non-profit, association or CPA firm doing not-for-profit audits and or consulting.
  • Minimum of three years of management experience
