Job Summary

In this newly created position, our growing client is seeking a Chief of Staff (COS) who will serve as a senior-level staff member managing a variety of special projects (as assigned) in service to our CEO, Senior Leadership and the organization. The COS directly reports to the CEO and supervises staff of the Executive Office creating team cohesion to ensure the CEO has the right information available at the right time to operate externally and make decisions and then follows-up to ensure implementation.

The COS will play a key role in supporting the CEO’s management of direct reports by partnering to identify annual strategic priorities, supporting team unity and accountability on shared projects. They will partner with the CEO and VP for Development to orchestrate the process to effectively deliver Board meetings and retreats in service to the Board development strategy. The COS will also actively engage the CEO and other leaders in strategic thought partnership on a regular basis to foster strategy development for the future of of the organization.

Note: Prefer the role to be located in Portland, Oregon but other areas will be considered domestically.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following areas:

  • Supervises three staff and the priorities of the Executive Office to ensure the CEO is well supported to carry out their role. Works in close partnership with the Special Assistant to the CEO ensuring the CEO has the right information available at the right time to make decisions and then follows-up to ensure effective implementation.
  • Proactively monitors CEO schedule as well as Executive Office team performance and adapts to new or different demands placed on the CEO to provide more effective support.
  • Supports the professional development of the Executive Office staff and their cohesion as a team.
  • Serves as a member of the organization’s Executive Team and participates in strategic and operational leadership of the organization.
  • Actively and regularly engages the CEO and other leaders in strategic thought partnership on organizational strategy development.
  • Provides support to the CEO’s management of direct reports by identifying agenda items, planning annual priorities, implementing projects/project management, tracking accomplishments, designing team retreats, and supporting team accountability.
  • Performs special projects for the CEO, as assigned annually (e.g., problem solving with key leaders on new bodies of work, orchestration of All Staff Retreats, etc.).
  • Serves as primary office contact for Portland Office management (lease, IT, space assignments, emergency management, etc.).
  • Shepherds all contracts management for the Executive Office.
  • Leads budget management of board and Executive Office Budgets.
  • Serves as key liaison/representative of the CEO on internal culture building efforts –internal communications, all staff meetings, all staff retreats, holiday parties, etc.
  • Provides oversight of the organization’s Board operations allowing the CEO and VP for Development to focus squarely on the strategic development of the board, relationships with board members and fundraising events. This includes managing a cross-departmental team to (1) plan and deliver board retreats, trips, meetings, and events and (2) support effective board operations and communication.

Role Requirements

  • 10 or more years of professional experience, specific experience in nonprofit management, environment/marine conservation, or advocacy preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience in wide-ranging or cross-functional areas of nonprofit management, and an eagerness to learn new skills.
  • Exceptional cultural competency and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Advanced experience implementing change management initiatives.
  • Experienced in building high performing teams.
  • Well versed in budget management.
  • Advanced project management skills.
  • A collaborative leader that can work in service to colleagues, influence key stakeholders and facilitate work effectively across diverse teams.
  • Ability to juggle many tasks simultaneously and prioritize duties.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, second languages highly appreciated.
  • Able to produce high quality work and exercise good judgment.
  • Able to train, develop, manage, and lead professional and support staff.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of experience required; graduate degree preferred.

Compensation

Our client is targeting a hiring range of $144,670 – $198,500, which will be commensurate with the candidate’s specialty skills, years of experience, location and unique background. Our client is open to feedback from the market and would welcome the ability to connect with potential candidates whose salary requirements may be outside of the expected hiring range.
